The landscape around young people’s and children’s behaviour online and offline is constantly changing. Following the recent introduction of The Abusive Behaviour & Sexual Harm (Scotland) Act, the legal implications for young people and our knowledge as practitioners of these implications, is as important as ever. 

The main theme for this event is the law in relation to sexual health, relationships and behaviours.

Youth Particpation in Internet Governance

The seminar will explore how participation of young people in shaping the Internet can be ensured without reproducing and creating new patterns of exclusion and will formulate recommendations for future action to be taken by the Youth Department of the Council of Europe in order to support young people and their organisations meaningful participation in Internet Governance processes.

Plans for new data protection rules in the UK have been outlined in the Queen’s Speech.

Digital Xtra Fund

Digital Xtra Fund on the hunt for inspiring digital initiatives for young people.

Projects that teach digital technologies skills to young people could be in line for a financial boost as the Digital Xtra Fund announces its first funding round since becoming a charity.

A total of £50,000 will be available for projects that inspire young people by taking digital skills out of the classroom and teaching concepts like computational thinking, coding, digital making, or data science in a fun environment. Applications close 1 September and each project can apply for up to £5000.

Young Scots Reveal Challenges to Their Rights Online

Young Scot 5Rights Youth Commission launched their final report after presenting their findings and recommendations to the Cabinet Secretary for Culture, Tourism and External Affairs, Fiona Hyslop, and the Minister for Childcare and Early Years, Mark McDonald, in the Scottish Parliament.

Their report, entitled ‘Our Rights’, describes how Scotland can realise the rights of children and young people in the digital world.

Digital Leaders 100

The Digital Leaders 100 scores from the public vote will be combined with the scores from the expert judging panel to create the Digital Leaders 100 list. Voting closes this Friday June 09 at 12 noon.

The final DL100 list, along with the winner of each category, will be announced at a gala dinner on June 22nd as part of the National Digital Conference 2017.

Insight into the Teenage Brain with Prof. Sarah-Jayne Blakemore

World-renowned neuroscientist and author, Professor Sarah-Jayne Blakemore, is the speaker at this year’s Angus Miller lecture which will be held at the Royal College of Physicians in Edinburgh on April 5th 2017.
 

Professor Blakemore will be exploring her work in the field of adolescent brain development, and its implications for education and policy. The lecture will take place on Wednesday 5 April from 6pm-8pm at the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh. Online Safety Briefing Sessions

Delivered by the South West Grid for Learning (SWGfL), and in partnership with the Scottish Government and local Child Protection Committees, Online Safety Live is a programme of events designed exclusively for professionals working with children and young people and they’re completely FREE.

The events are two hours long and cover a broad range of online safety topics. At the end of the event all delegates receive access to an online resource area containing links to all the materials mentioned, signposting to sources of help and support as well as a live copy of the presentation itself.

Safer Internet Day 2017

The UK Safer Internet Centre – a partnership of three leading charities; Childnet, the South West Grid for Learning and the Internet Watch Foundation – provide resources for children, schools and families, and tools for getting involved at saferinternetday.org.uk.

The day offers the opportunity to highlight positive uses of technology and to explore the role we all play in helping to create a better and safer online community. It calls upon young people, parents, carers, teachers, social workers, law enforcement, companies, policymakers, and wider, to join together in helping to create a better internet.

Digital Romance - A Brook/CEOP project

Brook, a sexual health charity for young people, and CEOP, a Command of the National Crime agency, are working together on a project called Digital Romance.

The aim of the project is to learn more about how young people flirt, develop, maintain and end romantic relationships using digital technologies. The project will investigate how professionals can support young people to stay safe and enjoy their lives and relationships without harm. Often, the messages given to young people are focused on risk and danger.  This project aims to therefore get an accurate picture of young people’s lived experiences.
